The FAMU Center for Workforce Development coordinated a Wellness Day in honor of Black History Month on Thursday, February 16, 2017 from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. The day consisted of presentations geared towards promoting overall wellness within the Tallahassee community: mental wellness, financial wellness, and physical wellness. All presentations made and screenings conducted were from organizations within Tallahassee community that are accessible to Tallahassee residents.

The Tallahassee Sickle Cell Foundation conducted sickle cell disease screenings on nine participants and Bond Community Health Center screened ten participants for HIV/AIDS. Overall 40 Tallahassee residents participated in the Wellness Day.

The order of the event went as followed:

Financial Advisor and President of Poppell Financial Group R. Vaugh Poppell, CPA presented on Tax minimization strategies, college funding strategies, college funding planning, and retirement planning  from 11:00 AM – 11:45 AM.           

The Tallahassee Lenders Consortium Assistant Executive Director Karen Miller, and Home Ownership Specialist Lavelle Dorriety presented on Home buying tips, foreclosure prevention, credit management, and credit building from 12:00 PM – 12:45 PM.

Dr. Juanita Gaston, the owner of JG RootsFinders, LLC had a presentation titled Finding your Roots: An Introduction to African American Genealogy/Family History, which covered how to look for your ancestors and relatives, where and how to start; and identifying what you know and what you do not know from 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM and from 4:00 PM – 4:45 PM.

Lastly, Dougla-Khan Stancil, M.Ed., L.M.H.C., a licensed mental health counselor from the FAMU Office of Counseling Services  presented on stress management, mental health awareness, and coping with depression from 3:00 pm – 3:45 pm.
